Activities Guide

Activities available range from bird watching to caving…the area being a paradise for botanists and ornithologists.

The mountains around the village are perfect for rock climbing and mountaineering and the beauty of the landscape lends itself to excursions and hikes. Other possibilities are pot-holing and water sports with hang gliding nearby in El Bosque.

Walking
The countryside around Montejaque is perfect for hikers of all levels and the house has maps for long and short routes from the doorstep.

Walking Treks

Bird Watching
Montejaque is ideally located to view the spring and autumn migrations between mainland Europe and Africa. Honey buzzards and black kites float through the mountain passes above the village and soaring Griffon vultures are a daily sight, along with Hoopoes, Bee eaters and Golden Orioles. Whatever the time of year, the countryside here is a must for anyone interested in birds and wildlife in general.

Bird Watching

Spanish Birds based in Ronda runs daily tours in the area and are highly recommended for those wishing to discover a selection of the 200 species to be found here.

Other related activities include botany, entomology and astronomy.

Caving, Pot-holing
Just outside Montejaque is the Cueva del Gato. This cave is 4.5km in length, crossing the Sierra de Grazalema and following an underground river which forms huge caverns and underground lakes. Access is by permit only but there is a cool pool at the entrance open to all.

Caving

The Cueva de la Pileta (7km) is a most uncommercialised site containing cave paintings dating back to the Paleolithic era and is thoroughly worth a visit.

Horse Riding
Join a group and trek through the spectacular Grazalema Natural Park. Contact leaflets are to be found in the house.

Golf
Towards the coast about an hour away, there are numerous golf courses all of a very high standard but our favourite is the one at Antequera, a little further but well worth the drive.

Beaches/Coast
There is an excellent route down to the Costa del Sol for those that wish to visit the many beaches or view the fabulous marinas in Puerto Banus or Marbella. The journey takes about an hour.
